Medical Students

At Barrack Lane Medical Centre we are proud to be placement host for medical students from the University Of East Anglia (UEA). Each year we have groups of students come to Barrack Lane throughout the year for learning and training in a primary care setting and gaining experience in how a GP practice works and the type of problems they will encounter while working in GP practices and the NHS.

While we do provide classroom based learning, we also provide practical learning and experience for these students where we get patients to come in and talk about their health conditions, participate in medical tutorials and also conduct appointments and consultations with patients while supervised by a fully qualified GP/Doctor.

For each week the students cover a different topic and health condition. To assist the students with their learning we review the records of patients with the health conditions related to the upcoming week's topic. After looking at your records we may invite you in to speak or have a consultation with the medical students if your records show it may be beneficial to their training were they to see you.

Yes, just like with a normal doctor you are not forced to see them and you can decline any examination you are not comfortable with and can request a chaperone be present if you would prefer. For any consult or talk with the students there will be a fully qualified GP/Doctor supervising. If you have been contacted about seeing the students and you would not like to see them or would not like to be considered for seeing the sudents, please call the surgery or email us at barracklanesms@nhs.net to let our student administrator know.

Most of the students won't have any medical qualifications before starting the course and are training to get these qualifications. For any consult or talk with the students there will be a fully qualified GP/Doctor supervising and any examination that is undertaken, the students have been trained in performing. 

Patients seeing the students only need to turn up at the practice and sign in for their appointment as normal. We do ask patients before their appointment to sign a consent form to say they are happy to see the students and afterwards an optional small feedback form to comment on the students performance during their consultation.
